Pretentious Glassware – Your Next Glassware Upgrade

Pretentious Glassware – Your Next Glassware Upgrade

If you’re like Ron and I, you know that a beer in the right glass just tastes better.  Sure we’ll never complain if a bar gives us a shaker pint, but they are really doing the beer a disservice by using this catch-all glass.  A lot of people have tried to make “the perfect beer glass”, but the truth is that each beer is unique, and the right glass can accentuate the right characteristics of the beer style.  I stumbled upon The Pretentious Glassware Beer Glass Company and was instantly drawn to their beautiful glassware.  As you’ll see in the picture above, they don’t conform to the one-glass-fits-all philosophy, but instead has crafted an entire lineup of hand-blown glassware for your beer.

Besides the fact that their glasses are absolutely gorgeous, Pretentious Glass is also unique due to the fact that every single glass is hand-blown by Founder/Artist Matthew Cummings.  They are crafted using traditional techniques, and no machines every touch the glasses.  Matthew started by just making a glass for hoppy beers, but since has developed glasses for all occasions:

After making that first glass, I started to notice a lack of unique beer glasses for craft beer. It was just such an obvious problem that it was invisible…hiding out in the open. I started the Pretentious Beer Glass Company as a remedy for that problem, and spent over 6 months making, testing, and refining designs that highlight different styles.

We reached out to Matthew, and he was gracious enough to send us both the Malty Glass and the Aromatic Glass.  You can check out our review of the two below.

Malty Beer Glass:

You may have seen glasses with one bulb to trap the malty flavors, or they’ll have ridges to release aroma, but I don’t know of any glass on the market that works quite like the Malty Glass.  The three bulbs also have the advantage that they can create a triple-head on nitro beers.

The Malty Glass emphasizes all of the flavors and aromas of your favorite malt-forward beers, and looks great doing so!

Aromatic Glass:

The Aromatic Glass’s might look like a stemless wine glass, but what sets this apart is the mountain pushing up through the bottom of the glass.  This mountain serves many purposes.  One, it helps collect CO2 and release it to the top of the glass.  That releases some more aroma that would otherwise be trapped in the beer.  Two, it sloshes the beer around as you drink, again releasing more aroma. Three, it reveals itself as you drink and just looks great! The other key feature to this glass is the super-narrow opening at the top.  This focuses and intensifies all aromas directly into your nose.

What really sets these glasses apart from the rest is the fact that they are extremely thick for specialty glasses.  With some glassware, you might be afraid to cheers glasses together, or even hold it too tight, but these have the same thickness as your standard Shaker Pint glass.  We give these glasses two thumbs way up, and if you’re looking to up your glassware game, check out The Pretentious Glassware Company to find the glass that’s right for you!

– Cheers
