We love our smartphones. While Cory and I differ on which phone is more dominant (I’m an iPhone guy, while he…is less intelligent than I) we both love mobile technology and filling our phones with awesome apps to make our lives just a little bit easier. We get especially giddy when our love for craft beer intersects with our mobile nerdiness. In the past, we’ve brought you a number of reviews of craft beer smartphone apps. – and today we bring you yet another – one that promises to help make one of life’s most difficult decisions; picking the right beer style; just a little bit easier.
Today, in the craft beer application spotlight, we have ‘YourBeer’ – an app designed to assist in choosing the perfect style of beer based off your very unique and individual personality! The premise is simple; answer a few simple and entertaining questions, and YourBeer will pick the perfect beer style to match your persona! Take a look at our spotlight video of YourBeer!
YourBeer has a very simple and straightforward user interface that pretty much anyone will find accessible and usable. To begin, you simply press the start button, and you are taken to a series of 5 personality-gauging questions. There are a bank of different questions, though they will begin to recirculate the more you take the quiz.
Once you have reached the end of the quiz, YourBeer will, using a mysterious algorithm, select the perfect style of beer that will match not only your pallet’s preferences, but your unique personality!
One nice aspect of YourBeer is that when you do receive your recommendation, the app gives a little blurb about the stye including flavor characteristics and a specific beer recommendation that falls within that style. One way in which this area could be improved within the app is to include a link to your favorite beer blog (ahem) with beer reviews by style to give the user more options and information on the style. However, if you are standing in front of the the shelves at your local bottle shop, or at the bar of your favorite restaurant, the information YourBeer does give should get you started in the right direction.
In full disclosure, I have taken the quiz a number of times and answered differently each time, only to repeatedly be told to grab a cream ale. Now, I love cream ales, but SURELY there must be another beer style out there that my personality could get down with!
YourBeer is a free app, but there is an option for in-app purchases. $0.99 will unlock even more personality-based questions to help further narrow down the style that is your true craft beer soul-mate.
Conclusion:
Overall, if you are an experienced craft beer lover or craft beer aficionado, YourBeer may not be what you need in your craft beer smartphone app arsenal. Chances are you already know what you know, and you know what you like (bonus points for anyone who can get the reference) – so for you, we would say that YourBeer is not worth your storage space.
That being said, if you, or someone you know is new to the world of craft beer, it can be extremely challenging to narrow down the seemingly endless amount of choices available to consumers. YourBeer can help you get going in the right direction. Honestly, I have no idea what part of my answers deemed cream ale my perfect match, but does it really matter? I haven’t had one in awhile, and now I am craving one.
